Easter celebrations at Kool Kidz Ravenhall kicked off last week with a visit from the Easter Bunny!

During the week we had been having conversations in our rooms about Easter and what it meant for each child and their family. We shared picture books at group time and created egg art, and learned that the thing the children were most excited for was the Easter eggs. From this we chose to build on their excitement by holding our own whole centre Egg Hunt! The children excitedly prepared by making and decorating their own baskets with the educators in their rooms.

 

On Thursday morning the children watched with wonder as the Easter bunny hopped around our garden hiding the Easter eggs for them to find. We were so happy to be joined by the families of the children for this special occasion. Together with their families the children collected eggs and put them in the baskets they had made during the week, and even got to meet the Easter Bunny!  It was lovely to see the children cooperating and sharing their found eggs with one another, sharing their excitement and wonder at their discoveries.

 

Our Easter egg hunt links to our Kool Beginnings Curriculum area ‘Let’s Pretend’ as it helps to foster young imaginations  This experience also links to EYLF Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. During this whole process the children were developing dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, imagination, enthusiasm, commitment, creativity and persistence. Kool Kidz have their very own special curriculum; a curriculum that has been specially designed just for Kool Kidz services and they are the 11 Blocks. The 11 blocks assist families to see what learning areas are being encouraged and planned but also ensures that educators are carefully implementing areas of interest that instil learning.

ACTIVE HEALTHY BODIES

Kool Kidz Ravenhall are making 2018 a year of promoting healthy foods and the importance of being active. At the end of last year, we introduced cooking master classes to our three to five-year-old group. It was/is such a success; not only is it paving a pathway to healthy eating, but it also gave opportunities to learn about risk assessment, life skills and a great way to exercise our social skills.

To continue this journey, we did a little research within our educators and found that Natalie, our wonderful educator from Beetlebugs, does dancing. So, we proposed an idea and she jumped on this opportunity.

We researched the benefits, and we were quite excited to see what they were:

  • Boosts Self Esteem – dancing makes you feel good, and when you feel good you release the ‘feel good’ hormone of Serotonin. It also promotes children to express themselves through creative movements.
  • Improves Memory – During a dance class, children will need to remember steps and sequences. It also builds new neuro connections in the brain, that aid with long term memory and spatial awareness.
  • Children improve their skill to listen – Not only will they be encouraged to listen to instructions, but also learn to listen to different beats of music.
  • Positive Social Skills – In a non-competitive environment, children will learn to praise one another and build positive relationships.
  • Expression of Oneself – Dancing can also provide another outlet for children to express themselves

Natalie sat down and planned out her lessons for the next four weeks. Our first lesson was all about learning the importance of stretching and warming up, and then a few basic moves were introduced. Children were engaged,  and excited by the idea and process. Natalie was so impressed with everyone’s choice to be involved and she could tell by their enthusiasm and engagement that this will definitely be an ongoing program.

Kool Kidz Ravenhall Celebrates The Lunar New Year / Chinese New Year

One morning a very excited Sarina burst through my door with two plastic bags filled with intriguing items. “Have you got a minute Tash? I am just so excited that I wanted to run this past you before I got stuck into to it”. With whatever she was about to show me I was going to ok it, there was no way I could turn down an overly excited and enthused educator, that wanted to implement something that excited her.

“On the 16th of Feb, we celebrate Lunar New Year”… and that is how her idea begun. Sarina was excited to bring in her cultural celebrations into the service and share it with all the rooms, the two plastic bags, they were filled with beautiful and different decorative items, all red and gold. Sarina was so kind to share these with all our rooms and offer some information to our educators about the Luna New Year. Sarina also had a friend who participated in a parade and had access to a dragon costume. She brought this in too and was able to teach and talk about the costume and what it is used for. When the Dragon made it’s debut, children and educators showed the same excitement. Educators encouraged children to make loud music using instruments so that the dragon could dance, (you can catch a small video on our facebook page).

Seeing as we just had celebrated Australia Day, this was a nice way to transition into another cultural celebration. Each room (according to their children’s interests and developmental stage) are celebrating differently. The Honeybees are all about sensory experiences and exploring colours and cause and effect – so they are looking at creating lanterns that the children can decorate using paint and their hands, (only willing participants of course). Jitterbugs want to make their own money bags and wall hangings and Butterflies and Kinder are learning about the history of Chinese New Year in story form. Both rooms will also offer creative art experiences that will reflect what they are learning.

Butterflies and Kinder Explore the World of S.T.E.M Through Gardening.

One afternoon, our Kinder Teacher began a discussion on electricity and water and why both needed to be saved to make our planet healthy again. This sparked quite an interest with most children, some even went home telling their parents to switch their TV off because they needed to save power.

As days went on, the children alongside with their educators brainstormed ideas on how they could save water. A bucket was chosen and the children now pour all unused water in it, and save it for watering the plants around the service.

When Natasha (Educational Leader) and Educators from Butterflies and Kinder talked about introducing STEM, the educators wanted to use an interest area to spark inquiry making and hypothesising. This lead them to doing some gardening and discussions on how plants actually grow and what they need to grow.

The children are always eager to check their own little herb pot (made from water bottles) and see what stage of growth they are up to. Some children’s herbs have not sprouted yet, when posed the question to why, everyone had different theories.

I’m quiet keen to see where this goes and what it leads into. (Shaping the future

How to Make Easy and Healthy Loaded Potatoes!

As 2018 rolled in, so did our ideas for our Cooking Master Classes; to kick off a new year we thought of introducing Healthy Loaded Potatoes.

Our wonderful chef pre-baked all the potatoes in foil whist the little chefs prepped their ingredients. In this master class, children were introduced to the grater. Children had turns at grating carrot, cucumber and slicing tomato, capsicum and lettuce.

It was wonderful to see the children who had participated during last years experiences, remember the safety rules that went with using knives.

During the experience, educators had conversations about the vegetables and fruits we were using, for instance, where does a potato grow? Where does a tomato grow?
It was quite interesting, as majority of the children knew that some grew in the ground and others in trees, one child even said a strawberries grow on a bush.

Another interesting observation was made, most children ate all the healthy toppings and left the potato, which definitely surprised me; I had presumed that children would eat the potato and leave the toppings. Was it because they helped prepare the toppings?

Back in the room, we had conversations about grocery stores, farms and speciality stores such as seafood shops and butchers. Children made reference to when they visit these stores and what they usually buy. Our Kinder Teacher (with the help) of the children, created a recipe scrap book. It’s magnificently large and looks great as steps are shown in pictures.

 

Healthy Loaded Potatoes Recipe 

 

Ingredients

1-2 potatoes per person***

Foil

Carrots

Cucumber

Tasty Cheese

Cherry tomatoes

Capsicums (red and green)

Lettuce***

Kidney Beans*** – tin

Corn Kernels – tin

 

Method

Pre-heat oven to 180 (fan forced)

Wash and dry your potatoes

Wrap each potato* individually in foil and place on tray and bake for

In the meantime, grate your carrot, cucumber and tasty cheese into individual bowls.

Slice your cherry tomatoes in quarters

Thinly slice your capsicums

Shred your lettuce*

Open and drain kidney beans* and corn and place in two separate bowls.

Once potatoes are cooked right through, with a sharp knife cut an oval shape out of the potato (long ways) and scoop potato out with spoon. (We will use this as a lid once we are done loading up).

Add your toppings and BON APPETITE

***The amount of potatoes would depend on the amount of people you were catering for.

***You could use sweet potato too

***Spinach leaves would be a great nutritional alternative

***You could also use baked beans

Christmas Fun at Kool Kidz Ravenhall

There is something about this silly season, even though it’s a mad rush to have everything ready, everything finished and complete, there is still a sense of joy and light heartedness. I’ve spent quite some time in the rooms over the last few days, and I have loved watching how each child’s eyes light up at the sight or mention of Christmas.
Each room introduced an activity that represented the children’s interest and Christmas:

Honeybees, have been exploring finger painting and sensory activities, so the educators encouraged children to create their Christmas baubles. Over the past few months we have seen children engage in many sensory activities – one being painting. We have also seen a development in the way children react to the paint on the hands; they completely embrace it now exploring the texture and markings they make with it.

Beetlebugs have also been doing a lot of sensory activities, (Nat and Kamal are part of our Green Team), and to continue with their encouragement of being sustainable, Nat and Kamal collected jars and children had the opportunity to create tea light candle holders. All in all, the educators reported back that it was more of a cause and effect and new sensory experience for the children as they had never painted on glass before.

Jitterbugs loved, loved, loved walking down our hallway (sometimes more than twice a day), to say hello to the Snowman, Star and Christmas Tree. After a few visits, the educators wanted to create a display and were cutting out trees, a child saw this and wanted one for their own, from this, more and more children joined in and our Jitterbugs made their own Christmas trees and wreaths.

Children were also given the option of creating their own Christmas cards, they decorated them with various materials and a photo of them doing so, was placed inside with a sweet message.

Butterflies and Kinder children have been busy, busy, busy. Educators have been decorating their rooms with dream catchers, wall hangings and other beautiful items. Children were quite intrigued by them, and so the educators collected natural materials, and other various items and children were given an opportunity to create their own.

Kinder also had their graduation; children came in and enjoyed a quiet evening celebrating each individual’s achievements and their journey over the past few months. They were awarded their certificates and received a small gift from Sheemal and Tobina. They also enjoyed a yummy homemade cake and took some great photos.

And finally this week, our Kinder teacher Sheemal set up her famous perception painting activity. But this time the children were introduced to Vincent Van Gogh, his history and his famous painting of the ‘Starry Night’.

Here’s a fun fact: After cutting his ear off, he was admitted to an institution. And the ‘Starry Night’ painting was inspired by the view he had outside his window of his room whilst in hospital.

  • Children were given a much softer version of this, and Sheemal told me that the children all sympathised with Vincent Van Gogh’s story and they had a lot of questions.

Children interpreted the famous painting by creating their own. I was honestly amazed. From there the educators loved watching as the children spoke about re-creating the shapes, patterns and lines in the masterpiece, that they came up with another idea. They tore crepe paper up, and had children re-create their version again but with the paper. Educators noticed how much they were focused on the patterns Van Gogh had used and they too attempted to replicate these.

 

Everyone at Kool Kidz Ravenhall is thrilled with the progress that the children are making and we can not wait to see what the New Year will bring.

We love seeing our Honeybees so settled in their environment, for educators it is the most rewarding gift; to know that you provided a nurturing environment that aided the children to feel happy, safe and secure.

Our Honeybees love being outdoors, they love exploring through their senses, and lately we have been noticing a lot more imitation play and small group play- where the children will engage in an activity alongside one another, and begin to understand that everyone has the right to be involved.

The educators have also been observing the children learning through cause and effect, it could be the rolling of a ball down a slide, or hitting the musical poles outside to discover that they make a sound.

Our Honeybees are becoming quite dependent outdoors and rarely look for their educators now. It is so wonderful to see our Honeybees growing and learni

ng every day.

Today was a very exciting day, today Kool Kidz Ravenhall celebrated another ‘first’.

When engaging in meaningful play in our outdoor environment, you can hear when the boom gates ring their siren and the toot of the train as it zooms past.
There is more than a handful of times, when the children will shout out or make reference to the train going past. The Educators have also seen and heard the children incorporate the train in their ‘pretend’ and ‘imaginative play’. One day, the Educators approached me on how they can follow up this interest, we brainstormed and decided that we would like to make the connection and transfer their knowledge from one context to another, “Let’s take them to see the trains go past…”
Risk Assessments, Permission Slips and Maps were planned out and on the 07/12/17, we set off on a (short) adventure.

The Educators were so excited on the morning of, that both educator and child shared their happiness and excitement with each other, what a nice way to build a sense of identity and a sense of wellbeing.

The children walked out with our Emergency rope (a great excuse to practise using the rope), and we walked alongside Kool Kidz Ravenhall, reminding children to ‘Watch where you step’. As we were making our way to a small hill, a Fire Truck drove past, the children all waved and they waved too, even flashing their lights and letting their siren ring for a few seconds… Every one cheered.
When the children reached the top of the small hill, the boom gate siren begun, “the train is coming” “the gates are down”, “where’s the train?”
After the first train, the boom gates stayed down… this only meant one thing, a SECOND TRAIN was on its way. Children were asked if they could hear the train coming and which side they thought it could come from, (this naturally sparked a debate), but it was a great way to get the children to hypothesise and make predictions. The expressions on their faces changed as they listened and watched for the train… When they heard the loud “TOOOOOOT”, they all gasped and pointed to the direction it was coming from. The children waved much more enthusiastically than the first time.
It was so heart warming to see the children so excited and we will definitely take another short adventure with our Jitterbugs.

Kool Kidz Ravenhall Jitterbugs have another exciting adventure!

It was a bright, sunny morning and our Educators from the Jitterbugs room were excited. Today, they were revisiting their bear hunt. The children had such a great time the last time trekking through the service, that this time the Educators were modifying it slightly and taking it outdoors.

The children were all part of the set up, and the Educators even asked our Honeybees and Butterflies to be involved. The children from the Butterflies helped to set up a tub full of wet sand and (their choice) tanbark, they also offered some trees for the experience that they had made. This time, our Honeybees had the hiding bear, and children needed to trek through their (Jitterbugs)  yard (obstacles), through Butterflies yard and then into the Honeybees. It was a GREAT adventure.

By far the biggest highlight was the muddy puddle, the children had the opportunity to stomp through it with their bare feet; the need to find the hiding bear became less and less, as they sploshed their feet through the water and explored using their senses.

The children did eventually venture off to find the bear but quickly returned to the GREAT and SPECTACULAR muddy puddle.

It was a great experience that exhibited and taught many great skills; team work between educators, team work between children and team work between children and educators. We can also identify new interests and FUN!

So happy our little friends discovered something new and fun on this Adventure.

Don’t miss the Kool Kidz Ravenhall Kindergarten Information Night featuring an opportunity to meet our Kinder Teacher Sheemal Narayan and Educational Leader Natasha Apap who will do a presentation on our enriching KBC curriculum and the Kool Kidz Ravenhall difference.

We’ll explain the Early Years Learning Framework, how it connects to our program and provide opportunities to ask questions in a special Q&A.

We’ll also give parents tours of our state of the art service and provide plenty of finger foods, drinks, coffee and tea for the occasion.
