6 Reasons Why Long Day Care Kindergarten Benefits Families

Choosing the right kindergarten program for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. If you’ve been weighing up long day care kindergarten against sessional kinder, both options deliver the government-funded kindergarten program.

But the experience, flexibility and support they offer can look very different.

To help you understand the difference, we sat down with Patricia Matuku, our Early Childhood Teacher at Kool Kidz Craigieburn, to learn more about our long day care kindergarten and what it offers our children and families.

What Is Sessional Kindergarten?

Sessional kindergarten is a standalone preschool program typically offered two days per week, for a total of 15 hours.

It’s designed for three- to four-year-olds and runs only during school hours.

While sessional kinder provides a quality early learning environment, it operates independently from childcare.

If you need care outside those hours, you’ll need to make separate arrangements for your child.

What Is Long Day Care Kindergarten?

Our long day care kindergarten delivers the very same government-funded kindergarten program, but in a full-day childcare setting.

At Kool Kidz, our centres are open from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and our qualified Early Childhood Teachers run the kinder program from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm each day.

Your child receives their full 15 funded kinder hours, and you have the flexibility to drop off and pick up at your convenience, allowing your child to spend even more time in the kinder classroom if they attend on additional days.

The Benefits of Long Day Care Kindergarten

1. Your Child Gets the Full Kinder Program (Plus So Much More)

Kool Kidz delivers the same program as sessional kinder, led by qualified Early Childhood Teachers and aligned with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF), the 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning and Child Safe Standards.

At Kool Kidz, everything happens through play-based learning.

Patricia explained that the key to the curriculum is that it’s child-led, meaning it follows your child’s existing interests. If they love Play-Doh, then learning is structured using it. If they’re smitten with trains, letters and numbers go on trains.

Your child might practise writing in shaving foam or fairy sand, hunt around the room for a letter of the week, or measure smoothie ingredients during Wednesday cooking sessions. There is always time for the garden and outdoor play.

Our school readiness program is about more than just knowing the alphabet. We focus on the social and emotional skills your child needs to thrive in a classroom, including:

  • Sharing and taking turns, curiosity and independence, as well as emotional regulation.
  • A weekly bush kinder program for children to explore nature, build treehouses, and learn Aboriginal stories and songs.
  • We also visit nearby primary schools to make the transition feel natural and exciting.

2. Consistency Builds Confidence

One of the biggest advantages of long day care kindergarten is the consistency it offers your child.

According to Patricia, “Children who come Monday to Friday typically adapt to their educators more easily. Those who come less often can struggle to settle in the mornings, because they aren’t in the classroom as often.”

At Kool Kidz, each kinder room has a permanent Early Childhood Teacher supported by two permanent assistants, which means the same familiar faces greet families day in and day out.

We have three staff members for a maximum of 22 children, providing more 1:1 attention than in standard programs.

Children settle sooner, build trust more readily, and feel confident enough to explore and learn when given a routine. For children who take a little longer to find their feet, this continuity is invaluable.

3. Your Child’s Day Is Child-Led and Goal-Driven

At Kool Kidz, children have a genuine say in their day. Patricia described three daily group times:

  • Morning welcome, where children help plan activities,
  • Midday intentional teaching session covering numbers, letters and special themes,
  • And an end-of-day reflection where children share what they enjoyed and what they’d like to see tomorrow.

Beyond the daily rhythm, every child has individual learning goals built on observation and informed assessment.

Those goals and your child’s progress are shared with you through the Kool Konnect app. And as Patricia points out, parents can contribute their own goals too.

“When your child has met their goal, then we focus on the next one. We’re always moving forward.”

Beyond the basics, our kindergartners enjoy cooking on Wednesdays, gardening on Thursdays, and Musical Minds incursions on Fridays.

4. Siblings Can Grow and Learn Together

For families with younger children, long day care offers something that sessional kinder simply can’t: all your children under one roof.

At Kool Kidz, your kinder child can visit younger siblings, join the toddler room for a picnic or read to the babies.

As Patricia explained, you don’t have to drop kids off at two different places, which makes the morning a whole lot easier for busy families.

5. Funding Works in Your Favour

Worried long day care might cost more? Through Kool Kidz, you can access both the 15-hour government Kinder Funding entitlement and the Commonwealth Childcare Subsidy (CCS).

For families who need care beyond school hours anyway, long day care is often the more cost-effective choice overall.

The great thing about long day care kindergarten is that Kool Kidz is flexible, so you can choose the days that suit your family best.

And forget the morning rush of packing lunchboxes. Our on-site chef prepares fresh, healthy meals every day (though we do have “lunchbox weeks” to help the big kids practise for primary school).

You can calculate our fee with the Kool Kidz subsidy calculator here

6. You’re Always in the Loop

Every day, parents receive a post with photos, activity updates, meal records and notes on sleep or toilet training.

If your child was teary at drop-off, educators can show you a photo of them happily playing just an hour later. Learning stories and direct messaging with educators are all in one place.

You’ll also have access to an on-site manager and 2IC throughout the day, a level of availability and support that most sessional kinder programs simply don’t offer.
