The 2016 Olympics was held in Rio this year, Australia 424 athletes competing in 199 scheduled events. Some fun facts about the Olympics:
- The Modern Olympic Games are based on the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece.
- They are held every four years, in honour of the Greek God Zeus, records show the Ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC in Olympia and weren’t halted until 394 AD.
- As of 2012, the USA has won more Gold (976), more Silver (758), more Bronze (666) and more total medals (2400) than any other nation at the summer games.
- The 1956 Olympics, were held in Melbourne, Australia, the first time the games had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. Apart from the equestrian events that is, which had to be held 5 months earlier in Stockholm,Sweden, as Australian quarantine had restricted entry due to foot-and-mouth disease in the UK at the time.
At Kool Kidz Tarneit we celebrated the Olympics by doing our own mini Olympics in the rooms. Honeybees celebrated by painting the Olympic rings. Beetlebugs and Jitterbugs held a mini Olympic with an obstacle course and their own medal presentation.
The Caterpillars, Butterflies and Kinder children all held a mini Olympics over the week. Events included long jump, egg and spoon races, balloon races, running races, obstacle courses and shot put. The children were so excited to receive their medals, asking if they could do it again tomorrow.
