At Kool Kidz Ravenhall we wanted to celebrate Children’s Week and use the learning interest areas that were already present within each room. Our first planned activity, was to have two canvas’ set up and invite / encourage, children to come over and express themselves creatively and explore with natural made paintbrushes. The children from the Beetlebugs Room joined in with the Butterflies Room, and children came and left the activity as they pleased. Children were so thrilled with the paintbrushes and the effects each one had on the canvas; there was a lot of colour mixing and conversations around the patterns.
It was also beautiful to observe the older children guide the younger children – these qualities were celebrated with each individual, (the smile on their faces definitely told us that they were happy to receive the praise).
Once the canvas’ were dry, they were handed over to Honeybees so that they too could add to our group masterpiece. Our Educator in the Honeybees relayed that the children love painting, “The children love making discoveries, and paint seems to be one of those things that always intrigues them, especially when it ends up on their hands”.
Educators from the Honeybees and Beetlebugs, brought in items from home that represented their culture. The children in the Honeybees were very much engaged in the different fabrics of the clothing items. They loved exploring using their senses – sight and touch and also those willing, tried on some traditional Indian clothing.
Children from the Beetlebugs Room had the opportunity to discover and explore items that were brought in from another Educator’s home. Children absolutely adored the turbans and the shoes that had bells on them. These items were left on a table outside and children engaged these items into their imaginative and explorative play.
Across the whole centre we finally received our special world music and it was a great opportunity to introduce them. We also snuck in some of the music that was featured at our Diwali Festival, and our hearts skipped a beat when majority of the children remembered the moves, and asked for it “again” and “again”.
