This week we revisited the solar system and children were challenged when they were asked to name different types of planets. The children were active participants in their learning and it was quite impressive that they remembered most of the planets. We also revisited the days of the week, the months of the year and learning to tell the time. We are continuing discussions on personal hygiene and we talked about respecting others by listening when other people were talking. The children engaged in letter and number recognition experiences and participated in a cutting experience where they used different textured materials.
We also celebrated Eid this week, a celebration that marks the end of the month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast every day from sunrise to sunset. Children engaged in creative art experiences which involved the moon and stars in developing a basic understanding of what Ramadan means. They also worked together as a team to bake delicious Eid biscuits. Exposing children to different cultures and having discussions with them enables them to have respect for diversity. The children thoroughly enjoyed these experiences with their friends. Group experiences like these enable the children to build positive relationships, develop their social and communication skills as well as learning to work collaboratively with others.
Our Physical Education program this week included activities such as long and high jumps, running races and bike racing. The children responded enthusiastically to this physical play as they became aware of the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others.
