Over the past month, we have sought out ways to promote and include recycling in our everyday practice. One way we have chosen to do this is through using recycled products in our arts and crafts area. In light of this, we have created our very own “Recycle Station”. This involves three bags full of re-usable paper, plastic and cardboard as well as a table filled with glue sticks, scissors and recycled pasting products.
This experience not only introduces the children to the concept of recycling, but also allows them to pick and choose what they would like to use, giving them a sense of agency. This experience also encourages open ended play where children are able to extend on their own learning through experimentation, imagination, inquiry and creativity.
Linking to the Early Years Learning Framework
Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity through the development of their emerging autonomy, interdependence, resilience and sense of agency.
Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world through becoming socially responsible and showing respect for the environment.
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners as they develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesis, researching and investigating.
