Today a group of pre-kinder children from Kool Kidz Mill Park went on an excursion to Woolworths Plenty Valley to participate in their Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tour.
The tour was really informative and engaging as they told the children (and educators) information and facts we didn’t know about their produce. We were given the opportunity to go into the bakery (wearing hairnets) and see how bread is made and then we also went out the back to have a good look at the produce store room, fridge and freezer! They also heard the bell ring indicating there was a truck that had arrived to bring some more items to the supermarket.
When we got to the fruit and vegetables section, the children each got to choose a piece of fruit and/or a vegetable from a box and then we had to guess if it was a fruit or vegetable. The avocado and tomato seemed to confuse a lot of the children, however, this was a great way to begin discussions with them about the differences between fruits and vegetables. With all the different colour fruits and vegetables we were able to make a rainbow.
We thank the staff at Woolworths Plenty Valley including Dave the Baker who showed us the big ovens, the donut maker machine and the bread slicer.
At the end of the session, each child got to take home their own fruit cup and show bag and special vegetable hat. All children had a blast.
