Heuristic Play

Heuristic Play

In the Snugglepots Room, we have introduced Heuristic play. Heuristic Play is described as ‘Discovery Play’. It is an unstructured play for children under the age of 3, which allows them to explore simple loose objects at their own leisure and interest without intervention or instruction from an educator.

Objects such as kitchen and household utensils, natural materials (seed pods, sticks, wooden balls), and recycled objects (tubes, containers, etc.) are put into an area for children to become familiar with and explore them using all of their senses. It is suggested that the ‘treasure baskets are only out for set periods of time and are then put away.

Heuristic Play offers infants the opportunity to naturally explore the items, the items selected provide interesting and stimulating sensory experiences for the children.
