Chinese New Year in the Jitterbugs Room

Chinese New Year in the Jitterbugs Room

The other week the children at Kool Kidz Childcare in the Jitterbugs room celebrated Chinese New Year by participating in ‘Firecracker Painting’ using cut up paper tubing.

This gave the children the opportunity to explore painting using a different textured brush. The children enjoyed the creative art experience of stamping their brushes on their cards to create a firework and decorating their artwork with coloured glitter of their choice. They had great fun watching the way their brushes created a big splat on the paper as they dusted their glitter everywhere. Frances happily named the colours of paint she wanted to use “red” and “yellow she said happily to her educator. Hannah decided she wanted to mix the glitter with the paint creating a different texture and Hugo, charlotte and felicity observed the paint sticking to their brush before placing it on their artwork.

Caitlin (one of the educators) discussed with the children what Chinese New Year is, the Traditions of Chinese New Year and the meaning of the symbolic firecracker. Lighting Firecrackers are a major custom performed to celebrate the coming of the Chinese New Year. We also learnt some Chinese words, such as ”nian”, which means New Year in Chinese. During the week educators will also be reading the book ‘Lanterns and Firecrackers’ with the children
