Caterpillars learn about caring for the environment with their very own vertical garden.

Caterpillars learn about caring for the environment with their very own vertical garden.

The Caterpillar room has started their Vertical Garden. Kathy explained to the children what we need to do and how we care for our new environment. Kathy showed the children what seeds we have and spoke about how we can do cooking experiences once they grow. Children need to learn to become active participants in society caring not only for their own things but also the needs and belongings of others.

The things children learn with this experience are:
Responsibility – caring for plants
Understanding – as they learn about cause and effect
Self-confidence – achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown.
Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from.
Cooperation – Shared pay activity and team work.

Scooping up the dirt, placing the seeds in the bottles and pouring the water all take fine motor control and strength.

We are looking forward to watching our seeds grow as we water them each day we are in.

We have planted Dill, Lettuce, Parsnip, Spinach Beet, Parsley, Chives, Thyme, Coriander, Onion, Pansy and lawn seeds.
